The Undertaking
I’ve heard a lot about Thomas Lynch, his book “The Undertaking,” and his work as a Funeral Director but not until recently had I seen the award-winning PBS Frontline documentary “The Undertaking” and read Lynch’s work myself. Wow. He’s good. Very good.
And so I commend to you the documentary — which you can watch online.
Also, check out the transcript of a Frontline interview with Lynch here.
Talk about a professional, ruminative, darn good writer who is clearly in the right vocation.
And to read some Lynch yourself, go here to read “Tract,” a very moving essay on Lynch’s visioning his own funeral, sort of
Funeral directors often get a bad rap. Sure, there’s some duds in the trade just as any other, but there’s some darn good ones out there. I did a lot of funerals in Scotland, all with the local crematorium, and to a person those with whom I worked were absolutely great. I don’t know what people study to become certified as a funeral director, but they certainly should read Lynch.
I’m grateful that in my study to become a pastor, I saw the documentary and read Lynch. You should too.

I agree. This may have helped prepare me for the parish better than anything else I did or learned in seminary.
Thanks, Marci. Also, I just got an email with some links and such more critical of Lynch, especially in terms of industry practices. Curious stuff. I’ll make the time to go more in depth later.

I suspect you might also find my survey of seminaries on the topic of funerals of some interest –

Lynch is good. Just reread some of his stuff in preparation to do some funerals.
